Former US President Donald Trump says he tried to "uphold the integrity and honesty of elections" when he pointed to voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
Trump released a statement on Saturday in response to the House Oversight and Reform Committees latest stance towards his role in the Capitol protests by his supporters on Jan. 6.
"The corrupt and highly partisan House Democrats who run the House Oversight Committee yesterday released documents-including court filings dealing with the rigged election of 2020-that they dishonestly described as attempting to overturn the election," Trump said, calling the election "rigged."
The committee released notes exposing content of a phone call between Trump, former acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and his deputy, Richard Donoghue, on Dec. 27, 2020.
"In fact, it is just the opposite. The documents were meant to uphold the integrity and honesty of elections and the sanctity of our vote," the billionaire businessman said. "The American People want, and demand, that the President of the United States, its chief law enforcement officer in the country, stand with them to fight for Election Integrity and to investigate attempts to undermine our nation."
The Republican leader has, so far, failed to offer any evidence of massive voter fraud and his lawsuits aimed at overturning the outcome have been laughed out of courts.
"Just say that the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me," the former president allegedly said just over a week before his supporters raided the Congress building to prevent lawmakers from certifying now-President Joe Bidens victory.
He was told in response that evidence of widespread voter fraud is required before an investigation could be launched.
Trump never conceded defeat in the November 2020 race and still questions Bidens victory, alleging he won through voter fraud..
